Afrobeats sensation Rema has revealed why he ended his recent romantic relationship, disclosing that persistent manipulation and emotional pressure pushed him to walk away.
The singer, born Divine Ikubor, said the relationship, while outwardly beautiful, lacked the peace he needed amid the demands of fame and a fast-rising global career.
Speaking in a recent interview with popular YouTuber Korty EO, Rema explained that he had hoped his private life would offer comfort and recovery from the intense scrutiny and expectations that come with stardom. Instead, he said the home environment became another source of stress, compounding the pressure he already faced from work and public attention.
According to the singer, the imbalance between career strain and domestic unrest gradually became unbearable, forcing him to prioritise his mental and emotional well-being. He noted that while love existed in the relationship, the lack of peace made it unsustainable, leading to his decision to end things and step back from dating for the time being.
Elaborating further during the conversation, Rema described the relationship as emotionally taxing, pointing to patterns he characterised as manipulative. He said the constant demands and tension eroded the sense of relief he expected to feel when away from the spotlight.
For an artist navigating global tours, studio schedules, and nonstop media focus, he emphasised that personal space should be a sanctuary rather than an extension of professional pressure.
The singer’s remarks shed light on the often-unseen challenges faced by high-profile entertainers, particularly young stars balancing rapid success with personal growth. Rema acknowledged that fame amplifies expectations not just from fans and industry stakeholders, but also within intimate relationships, where misunderstandings can easily escalate when boundaries are unclear.
He added that the experience taught him valuable lessons about self-awareness and the importance of emotional safety. At this stage of his life, Rema said he is choosing solitude and reflection over rushing into another relationship, stressing that he wants to be in a healthier space before opening himself up again.
“For now, I’m done,” he said, signalling a deliberate pause rather than a permanent withdrawal from romance.
The singer has previously spoken about lifestyle choices surrounding his career, including how he prepares for performances and the standards he values in a partner, often emphasizing authenticity over material wealth.
