Nigerian media personality, Tomike Adeoye, has questioned the practice of having children’s nannies wear uniforms when accompanying their employers to public gatherings, describing the practice as humiliating.
Adeoye shared her concerns in a video posted on Instagram, saying she would rather have her children’s caregivers dressed neatly and appropriately when they attend events with the family.
She particularly questioned the practice at social occasions where parents and their children may be dressed for the event while their nannies are required to remain in work uniforms.
Adeoye said she takes pride in the appearance of her children’s caregivers and does not view them simply as employees.
Adeoye’s comments also touched on the broader treatment of domestic workers within the home. She criticised employers who speak harshly to their nannies, stressing that caregivers occupy an important position because they are entrusted with children when their parents are away.
The media personality recounted an interaction involving one of her nannies, who reportedly told her boyfriend that even her employer could not speak to her disrespectfully or call her names.
Adeoye said she considered the caregiver’s awareness of her personal dignity a positive outcome of her employment experience.
