The Super Eagles of Nigeria booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-finals following a dominant 4–0 victory over Mozambique in their round of 16 clash on Monday at the Sports Complex Stadium in Fès, Morocco.
Ademola Lookman opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 20th minute, before Victor Osimhen doubled the lead five minutes later. Lookman struck again just after the break, netting his second goal of the evening in the 47th minute, and Akor Adams completed the rout in the 75th minute.
Nigeria’s comprehensive win marked the team’s biggest victory margin in an AFCON knockout fixture since Egypt defeated Algeria 4–0 in the 2010 semi-finals.
The result keeps the Super Eagles on track for a fourth continental title and sets up a quarter-final clash on Saturday in Marrakesh against the winner of the Algeria versus Democratic Republic of Congo tie.
The Nigerian team had a measured approach to the match, controlling possession and creating consistent scoring opportunities. Lookman, who returned to the starting line-up after featuring as a substitute in the group stages, set the tone with his incisive runs and precise finishing.
Osimhen, Africa’s 2023 Player of the Year, demonstrated his trademark athleticism and composure in front of goal, scoring twice despite sustaining a mid-game challenge from Mozambique’s Witi, which left him unscathed.
Commenting on his performance, Lookman, who was awarded Man of the Match, said, “I am glad I could contribute to the team’s success. We executed our game plan well and maintained focus throughout the 90 minutes.”
His impact extended beyond scoring, providing crucial assists for Osimhen and Adams, helping Nigeria dominate both flanks.
Coach Eric Chelle’s tactical adjustments also paid dividends. After resting several key players during Nigeria’s 3–1 win over Uganda in the final group match, Chelle reinstated Lookman and other regular starters, which added speed and creativity to the attack.
“Our objective was to control the game and create clear scoring chances,” Chelle said post-match.
“The players responded excellently to the strategy, and it was pleasing to see them execute with confidence,” he added.
Mozambique, making their first appearance in the AFCON knockout phase, struggled to cope with Nigeria’s intensity and pace. Their defence was repeatedly breached by well-timed through balls and incisive crosses, and the team failed to register a meaningful attempt on goal.
Despite qualifying as one of the best third-placed sides from the group stage, the Mambas were outclassed by a more cohesive Nigerian side.
The Super Eagles now face a crucial quarter-final against a team that has yet to be determined, as Algeria and DR Congo meet on Tuesday for a place in the last eight.
Observers have highlighted the opportunity for Nigeria to avenge their World Cup qualifying playoff defeat to the Leopards in November, should DR Congo advance.
With the team in confident form, fans and pundits alike are optimistic about Nigeria’s title prospects. The combination of Lookman’s technical skill, Osimhen’s finishing prowess, and Chelle’s tactical discipline has strengthened the Super Eagles’ chances of returning the AFCON trophy to Nigeria.
