Nollywood actress Rachael Okonkwo has confirmed her appointment as the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Film and Creative Industry Development to Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, saying she is taking on the responsibility with gratitude and a commitment to supporting the state’s creative sector.
Okonkwo made the announcement in a statement shared on her Instagram page, explaining that the appointment was granted in September but was only officially announced by her recently.
The actress, popularly known for her role in the Nkoli Nwa Nsukka film series, said the position was more than a title and offered an opportunity to contribute to the growth of the film and entertainment industry in Enugu State.
In her statement, Okonkwo expressed appreciation to Governor Mbah for the confidence placed in her, describing the appointment as one she received with humility and a strong sense of responsibility.
She said her years of working in Nollywood had given her an understanding of the creative industry’s potential to support economic growth, create jobs, preserve culture and promote Nigeria’s creative talents to a wider audience.
Okonkwo also noted that her experience in the entertainment sector would inform her approach to the new assignment. She said she hoped to help develop the state’s creative ecosystem and create more opportunities for emerging talents and established professionals.
The actress said the role would allow her to contribute to efforts to support filmmakers and other creatives, while helping position Enugu as a destination for film, arts, culture and entertainment.
She added that she was particularly interested in amplifying emerging talents and supporting initiatives that could strengthen the industry’s presence within and beyond the state.
Governor Mbah had announced Okonkwo’s appointment in September as part of a wider set of appointments involving aides across different areas of government. The actress’s confirmation follows that earlier announcement.
The development has drawn congratulatory messages from colleagues and fans on social media, including actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday.
Okonkwo thanked the governor for the opportunity, reiterating that she intended to approach the role with a focus on impact and the future of the creative industry in Enugu State.
