Nigerian gospel singer and minister, Nathaniel Bassey

Nathaniel Bassey becomes first African gospel artist to hit one billion YouTube views

Nigerian gospel singer and minister, Nathaniel Bassey, has made history as the first African gospel artist to surpass one billion views on YouTube, recording more than 1.014 billion views on his official channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main.

The milestone, which also places him among African gospel ministers with significant digital followings, was recorded as of November 1, 2026.

Data from his YouTube channel shows that it has attracted approximately 5.24 million subscribers, reflecting the growing international reach of his music and worship content.

The achievement comes during the October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, the online midnight worship and prayer programme founded by Bassey in 2017. The initiative has attracted participants from different parts of the world and contributed to increased attention on his ministry and musical releases.

Bassey opened his official YouTube channel on March 4, 2011, meaning the latest milestone follows more than 15 years of publishing gospel music, worship sessions, and ministry-related content on the platform.

The one-billion-view achievement also highlights the growing influence of African gospel music in the global digital entertainment space, where streaming platforms and social media have become important channels for artists to reach audiences beyond their home countries.

A major part of Bassey’s online presence is linked to the Hallelujah Challenge, which he introduced in 2017 as a midnight worship and prayer gathering. The programme has developed into an international religious movement, drawing Christians together through online worship sessions.

The October 2026 edition coincided with the period surrounding the latest YouTube milestone, further drawing attention to the singer’s digital reach and the popularity of his worship ministry.
