“My children were taken from me” — Bukky Wright opens up on painful past, acting journey

Veteran Nollywood actress Bukky Wright has shared the painful experience that pushed her into acting, revealing that she entered the movie industry after losing access to her children at a very young age.

Speaking during an interview, Wright disclosed that her decision to pursue acting was never driven by fame, popularity, or the desire to become a celebrity. Instead, she explained that she hoped appearing in movies would one day help her children recognise her and reconnect with her when they grew older.

The actress recounted how her life changed after marrying into a wealthy family that allegedly looked down on her and doubted her future potential. According to her, the family eventually took her children away from her while they were still very young, leaving her devastated and uncertain about what the future held.

“I actually started acting so that when my children grow up, they would be able to, at least, I never thought of being a star, at least know where to find me,” she said.

Wright further explained that she faced rejection and lack of acceptance from her former husband’s wealthy family, who believed she would never amount to anything meaningful in life.

“My children were taken from me when they were very young because I married into a very wealthy family, and they could not think I would become anything in this life. And here I am today,” she added as audience members applauded her honesty and resilience.

Bukky Wright remains one of the most respected figures in the Nigerian movie industry, with decades of experience and several memorable roles in both Yoruba and English-language films.

In recent years, the actress has occasionally shared moments from her family life with fans, especially milestones involving her children. In 2025, she celebrated the wedding ceremony of her son, Eniola, and his partner, Sara Bonet, in a joyful event that attracted warm reactions online.
