Lateef Adedimeji reveals why he became Nollywood’s ‘crying machine’ early in his career

Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Lateef Adedimeji, has disclosed that his emotional performances in movies during the early stages of his career were a calculated strategy to stand out in the highly competitive film industry.

Speaking during an interview on The Morayo Show, the award-winning actor said he deliberately focused on crying scenes because he wanted audiences to remember him for something unique and eventually recognise him by name.

Adedimeji explained that gaining recognition when he joined the industry was far from easy, particularly because many viewers identified him by his resemblance to a senior colleague rather than for his own abilities.

Although he considered the comparison a compliment, he said he was determined to build an identity that reflected his individual talent and would distinguish him from other actors in Nollywood.

According to the actor, he carefully studied the industry to identify areas that were often overlooked by performers and concluded that emotional scenes presented an opportunity to create a lasting impression. He said he became intentional about delivering powerful crying performances, even in scenes that required only a brief display of emotion, believing that excellence in those moments would make audiences remember him.

He explained that after carrying out extensive personal research, he challenged himself to maximise every emotional role he was given. According to him, if a script required only a few seconds of tears, he ensured those scenes were delivered with intensity and authenticity, making them memorable for viewers.

The strategy eventually paid off as audiences began associating him with his emotional performances, earning him the nickname “crying machine.” Adedimeji said the development marked a turning point in his career because it showed that viewers had started recognising him for a distinctive quality rather than simply comparing him to another actor.

He recalled that many people did not initially know his name but would identify him as “the guy who cries so much in movies.”

For the actor, that recognition signalled that he was making progress in establishing his own brand within the industry. He added that once audiences connected with that unique characteristic, they gradually became familiar with his name and broader body of work.

Adedimeji also emphasised that versatility remains essential for anyone seeking longevity in the entertainment business. He said actors and entertainers must be willing to develop a broad range of skills and adapt to different roles in order to remain relevant in an industry that continues to evolve.
