Nigerian television host, Morayo Afolabi-Brown, has revealed her struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts, alongside the personal and professional controversies that defined her 12-year journey on TVC’s flagship programme, Your View.
Afolabi-Brown, who resigned earlier this year from her role as lead host of the morning talk show, made the disclosure during an interview with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo.
She admitted that she battled deep depression at one point, describing how it pushed her to contemplate suicide.
“I was depressed. It got so bad that I thought I was suicidal. I walked on the express, hoping a car would hit me. It was that bad,” she recounted.
The broadcaster explained that she had been nursing thoughts of leaving Your View for years but only gained clarity about moving forward in 2024.
“It was when we were 10 years old that I knew it was time to go to the next thing. I had been harbouring that thought for a while, but I didn’t know how to go about it. But last year, I got that light-bulb moment,” she said.
Her exit in 2025 marked the end of a defining chapter in her career, but not without turbulence. At one point, she was dismissed from TVC due to political issues but was later reinstated after her identity was clarified to the then-presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“People now called Asiwaju, ‘Do you know whose child was sacked?’ He said, ‘I’m not aware.’ They said, ‘This is Alao Aka-Bashorun’s daughter.’ That’s when he knew it was me,” she recalled.
Afolabi-Brown has also faced intense scrutiny over her political views. During the 2023 general elections, she openly supported Tinubu, a stance that divided opinion among viewers. She was also criticised for remarks about Peter Obi, the Labour Party candidate, but later admitted her comments came from a lack of knowledge.
“It was because I did not know him. After I made that comment, people called me and said, ‘Morayo, do you realise that when he was governor, he actually served us?’ So I said, ‘Oh, I did not know,’” she confessed.
Despite the controversies, Afolabi-Brown became a household name through Your View, where she led conversations on politics, family, women’s rights, and national issues for over a decade.
Reflecting on her journey, she described leaving the show as both an ending and a new beginning, emphasising that her next phase will be guided by renewed clarity and purpose.
