Nigerian comedian and actress Helen Paul has opened up about the painful criticism she faced early in her relationship with her husband, Femi, revealing that people close to him questioned why he was dating her and suggested she was not good enough for him.
Paul said her husband’s boss once confronted him about their relationship, making comments that left her feeling inferior after she overheard the conversation. She recalled struggling with the remarks afterwards, saying the criticism affected her confidence and made her question her place in the relationship.
The actress said the experience became so difficult that she deliberately avoided attending the same church as her husband because she feared being compared with other people. According to her, the comments had a lasting effect on how she viewed herself and contributed to the insecurity she carried into their marriage.
Paul recalled that those fears were still present on her wedding day when she opened up to Femi about her concerns over the future of their marriage.
She told him, “If we last two years in this marriage, I’ve tried. But if we last forever, then God is the one at work.”
She said the experience eventually taught her not to allow other people’s opinions to determine her sense of worth. Paul stressed the importance of concentrating on oneself and taking care of one’s own life rather than allowing external judgments to shape how one sees personal value.
The comedian also recounted a difficult moment in the early stages of her career, when she was reportedly told that she did not have the right “look” for a N15 million job because of her teeth.
She said the criticism presented another obstacle at a time when she was trying to establish herself professionally.
According to Paul, veteran media personality Dayo Adeneye, popularly known as D1, played an important role in helping her overcome the challenge. She said she explained to Adeneye that she could not afford the dental treatment she needed, after which he and D1 supported her financially to undergo the treatment.
Paul said the intervention subsequently opened another opportunity for her, as her first television appearance after the dental treatment was on the Peak Talent Show. She recalled that the appearance marked an important point in her career following the difficulties she had experienced because of her appearance.
She further recalled that after receiving payment for the television job, she contacted D1 to ask for his share of the money. However, rather than requesting payment, she said Adeneye encouraged her to keep the money and enjoy the opportunity.
