Davido suspends music to lead Osun governor’s re-election campaign

Afrobeats superstar Davido has announced a temporary suspension of his music career for two months to spearhead the re-election campaign of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Osun State.

The singer made the declaration on Tuesday in Ede during the inauguration of the Imole Youth Campaign mobilisation team, where he was named chairman of the youth-focused political structure.

He said the break from music was necessary to dedicate his time, influence, and energy to grassroots mobilisation across the state in support of Adeleke’s second-term ambition.

According to Davido, the decision was driven by both family loyalty and his assessment of the governor’s performance in office.

He stressed that the campaign effort was aimed at consolidating ongoing developmental projects and ensuring continuity in governance.

“I have put my musical career on hold for two months to come and work for my uncle, not only because he is my uncle, but because he is doing a good job and still has more to accomplish. The job is not done,” he said.

He further urged members of the mobilisation committee to intensify outreach efforts across Osun State, particularly at the grassroots level.

“We are all here to support him to win the election with our influence. This is one of the most important committees because it focuses on youths,” he added, calling for coordinated door-to-door engagement to highlight the administration’s achievements and future plans.

The Imole Youth Campaign mobilisation team, which was inaugurated at the event, is structured across federal constituencies in Osun State. Davido chairs the committee, supported by a vice chairman and a secretary, alongside representatives drawn from constituencies including Osogbo, Ife, Ijesha South, Ijesha North, Ila, Ifelodun, Ede/Ejigbo, Irewole, and Iwo federal constituencies.

The group is expected to drive youth participation and strengthen voter engagement ahead of the election.

The announcement has further heightened political activity in Osun State, where preparations are already intensifying among major political stakeholders ahead of the 2026 governorship race.

Davido’s involvement is seen as a strategic boost for the incumbent governor, given his wide influence among young Nigerians and his significant public following both locally and internationally.

While the singer’s decision has drawn widespread attention, he indicated that his hiatus from music would be temporary, reaffirming his commitment to return to his entertainment career after the campaign period. For now, he said his focus remains on ensuring what he described as “victory at the polls” for Governor Adeleke.
