Afrobeats singer Davido has reflected on the political journey of his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, after his re-election as Osun State governor, describing the series of events that led to his emergence as the family’s candidate and his subsequent electoral victories.
Davido shared the reflection during a livestream following Adeleke’s latest victory in the Osun governorship election.
According to Davido, the political journey began with his uncle, Isiaka Adeleke, who was expected to become governor of Osun State but died under unclear circumstances. Following his death, the family had to choose another candidate to contest the governorship election, with Ademola Adeleke eventually emerging as the replacement.
Reflecting on Adeleke’s electoral record, Davido said his uncle had maintained an unbeaten record in the elections he contested.
“He has never lost an election. From the first election he ever did, he never lost,” the singer said.
Adeleke first contested the Osun governorship election in 2018 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. He was initially declared the winner, but the Independent National Electoral Commission later declared the election inconclusive, leading to a supplementary poll.
Following the rerun held on September 27, 2018, the then APC candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, was declared the winner. Adeleke subsequently returned to contest the governorship election in 2022, defeating Oyetola, who was the incumbent governor at the time.
In the July 16, 2022 election, Adeleke secured 403,371 votes and won in 17 local government areas. Oyetola challenged the result through the legal process, but Adeleke’s victory was eventually upheld by the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
Adeleke was subsequently sworn in as the sixth democratically elected governor of Osun State on November 27, 2022. The inauguration was held at the Osogbo Township Stadium, where he took the oath of office administered by the Chief Judge of the state.
Four years after his victory, Adeleke contested again in the 2026 Osun governorship election, this time under the Accord Party. His latest campaign resulted in another electoral victory, with the governor securing re-election on August 16, 2026.
The election results announced by INEC showed Adeleke polling 511,067 votes to defeat the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who recorded 444,815 votes. The result secured Adeleke another term as governor of the state.
