Davido reacts after losing N495 million following Super Eagles’ AFCON Defeat

Nigerian music sensation David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has spoken out after losing $348,000 (roughly N495 million) following the Super Eagles’ 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final defeat to Morocco on Wednesday, January 14.

The high-stakes match ended 0–0 after 120 minutes, forcing a dramatic penalty shootout in which Morocco prevailed 4–2.

The defeat was a heartbreaking blow for Nigerians eager to see the Super Eagles reach the AFCON final.

Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, was the standout performer, saving two crucial Nigerian penalties and securing his nation’s place in the championship decider. Nigeria’s missed penalties, including those by Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi, not only dashed the team’s hopes but also caused Davido’s multi-million-naira bet to collapse.

Ahead of the semi-final, Davido had publicly disclosed on social media that he had wagered $50,000 on Nigeria advancing to the final, sharing his bet slip with fans.

Confident in the team, he wrote: “Nigerians to make the finals and I’ll double my stake on my slip.”

The potential payout of $348,000 highlighted both the singer’s high-risk gamble and the growing intersection of celebrity culture and sports betting in Nigeria.

Following the loss, Davido posted a photo of himself enjoying a grilled fish meal, appearing relaxed despite the significant financial setback. Hours later, he shared another update showing he had left Morocco aboard his private jet, foregoing the third-place playoff match and signalling his intention to move on from the disappointment.

The incident triggered reactions from fellow celebrities and fans. Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday criticised Samuel Chukwueze for missing his penalty, commenting on Instagram: “Samuel Chukwueze make I no talk wetin dey my mind. You dey play penalty like woman, even me no fit play that kind ball.”

Fans took to social media to express frustration, while others commented on the risks associated with high-stake bets.

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali also reacted online, expressing disappointment over consecutive AFCON setbacks. While many praised his efforts, the team’s inability to convert key opportunities during the shootout dominated discussions.
