Nigerian music superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has sparked widespread conversation after revealing that he frequently asks God to guide him on the right time to retire from music.
The Afrobeats singer also shared his vision of building a support and therapy centre for highly successful public figures struggling with life after fame.
In a viral video circulating on social media, Davido reflected on the emotional impact of fame and the challenges that come when public attention fades. He explained that many individuals who once reached the peak of success often struggle mentally and emotionally once the spotlight shifts away from them, despite their awards, achievements, and global recognition.
According to him, the pressure does not end with success, as even the most accomplished figures can still feel unfulfilled or heavily criticised. He stressed that this reality is not limited to music but extends to sports and other entertainment industries where public expectations remain extremely high.
Davido further elaborated on his idea of a structured support system for former celebrities and athletes, saying he would love to build a centre dedicated to therapy and emotional healing for those who have experienced life at the top. He described the concept as necessary because of how difficult it can be to adjust after enjoying massive fame and influence.
He referenced football as an example, noting how even world-class athletes who have won major trophies still face criticism and pressure from fans and the media. He mentioned players who have achieved everything in the sport, including Champions League and World Cup victories, yet still encounter public dissatisfaction.
The singer specifically pointed to his friend Cristiano Ronaldo, highlighting how even the football icon has faced online criticism despite his long list of achievements.
Davido recalled moments during the World Cup where Ronaldo was heavily criticised on social media, despite his contributions to the sport over the years. He said this reality reflects the emotional strain that comes with sustained public exposure.
Davido admitted that this cycle of fame, pressure, and criticism is one of his biggest fears as an artist. He explained that he works extremely hard to maintain his career and reputation, and worries about making decisions that could negatively affect his legacy in the future.
Because of these concerns, the singer said he often prays for guidance on when to step away from music. According to him, his desire is not to fade out in a negative way or damage what he has built over the years, but to exit at the right time when his legacy is still strong and respected.
He added that his thoughts on retirement are not immediate plans, but rather long-term reflections on life after fame and how best to handle the transition when the time eventually comes. Davido emphasised that his priority is to protect his career, his mental health, and the value of his contributions to the music industry.
The video has since triggered mixed reactions online, with fans praising his honesty and openness about mental health and the pressures of fame, while others debated his comments about retirement and legacy in the entertainment industry.
