Peter Okoye, Mr P

‘Blood isn’t thicker than my peace of mind’ —Peter Okoye opens up on family betrayal, court battle

Singer Peter Okoye, popular known as Mr P, has rejected claims that women are responsible for the ongoing rift within the Okoye family, instead tracing the conflict back more than two decades to deep-seated issues over loyalty, trust, and financial mismanagement of their music business.

In a fiery series of posts on X, the former P-Square member addressed public narratives that had sought to link the family’s breakdown to any female influence.

He insisted that the betrayal he has endured began long before any of the Okoye brothers were married, and he warned against shifting blame onto innocent parties to suit any agenda.

“Before you drag any woman into this! No woman directed or advised anyone to steal from what I worked for over the years. Stop pushing that narrative to suit your agenda. None of us were even married 20-something years ago when this whole betrayal and stealing started! I said what I said,” Okoye wrote.

The singer made it clear that his decision to step back from family ties is not a reckless act of anger but a deliberate choice to safeguard his mental health and personal well-being.

He declared that even if his late parents were alive and chose to side with those who betrayed him, he would still not hesitate to distance himself.

“Even if my parents were alive and supported this kind of betrayal, I’d still choose to step back, cut them off, and protect my peace. Boundaries are necessary! Blood isn’t thicker than my peace of mind,” he stated.

The dispute, which remains unresolved and is currently before the Lagos State High Court, involves not only Peter and his twin brother Paul Okoye but also their elder brother, Jude Okoye.

Jude is facing prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of money laundering and diversion of royalties — charges he has denied.

The case has been adjourned to May 15, 2026. Recent court proceedings also revealed that Peter Okoye is a co-signatory to the Northside Entertainment Limited account, adding another layer of complexity to the financial disputes at the heart of the family feud.

P-Square, one of Africa’s most successful music groups, first split in 2017 following disagreements over management control, finances, and creative direction. The brothers reunited in 2021 to the delight of fans worldwide, but tensions quickly resurfaced over financial transparency and control of their music catalogue.

Peter made it clear that the current estrangement is not a recent development but the culmination of more than two decades of accumulated hurt.

“Now that I’ve uncovered the betrayal that has been going on for over 20 years plus, suddenly we’re blood? No… it doesn’t work like that. We are still in court,” he said.

Acknowledging the pain of the situation, he added, “Yes, it’s painful. And, yes, it’s my loss. But no one should keep reminding me that I was betrayed and used by my own blood for over 20 years plus.”
