Ayra Starr speaks on growth, new sound ahead third album

Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has revealed that her upcoming third studio album reflects a deeper phase of personal and artistic evolution, as she embraces growth into womanhood and explores new dimensions in her sound.

The 23-year-old singer made this known during an appearance on Apple Music Radio Takeover, where she spoke about her renewed approach to music-making, describing it as more experimental, expressive, and rooted in rediscovering joy.

According to her, the project captures a period of self-awareness and creative freedom, as she intentionally moves away from rigidity and allows herself to fully enjoy the process of making music.

“I’m literally becoming a woman, and it’s like you can hear that in my music now, like I’m growing sonically and I want to try different things, like just put myself out there, and have fun while doing it,” she said.

The singer also admitted that she had previously taken her craft too seriously, which affected her ability to fully enjoy creating music. Reflecting on that phase, she noted that she has now regained a sense of balance and perspective.

“I kind of lost the plot a bit, and I took it a bit too seriously, and it was never that deep,” she added.

She explained that her forthcoming album represents a turning point, one where she consciously prioritises happiness, spontaneity, and authenticity over pressure and perfection.

“I brought the fun back, and we’re enjoying ourselves,” she said.

While the album is yet to be officially titled, anticipation continues to build among fans and industry watchers, especially following the release of its lead single, Where Do We Go, which offers an early glimpse into the project’s evolving sound and thematic direction.

The new body of work is expected to further cement Ayra Starr’s place as one of the leading voices in Afrobeats, as she continues to push creative boundaries and redefine her musical identity.

Her remarks come amid ongoing conversations about the global rise of Afrobeats and the increasing influence of young Nigerian artists shaping the genre’s future. Ayra Starr, who has consistently delivered chart-topping hits since her breakout, remains at the forefront of this movement, drawing attention for her distinctive voice, style, and fearless artistry.

Although a release date for the album has not been confirmed, her latest comments suggest that the project will not only showcase sonic experimentation but also tell a more personal story, reflecting her journey, growth, and rediscovery of joy in music.
