Nigerian comedian and actor, Ayodeji Makun, popularly known as AY Comedian, has revisited a 2019 Instagram message in which Afrobeats star Asake asked for his support, reflecting on the singer’s remarkable rise after watching him perform at a sold-out concert in Houston, Texas, United States.
AY shared the old exchange after attending Asake’s performance at the Toyota Centre as part of the singer’s ‘In God We Trust’ tour.
The comedian said he did not see the message when it was originally sent, years before Asake became one of Nigeria’s internationally recognised music stars.
The message showed Asake, who introduced himself at the time as “Ololade”, reaching out to AY for help promoting a song titled ‘African Something’.
The singer appealed to the comedian to listen to the record and explained that having AY publicly support the song could make a significant difference to his emerging career.
His decision to revisit the exchange came as he reflected on the contrast between Asake’s position then and the large audience he now commands internationally.
The comedian stressed that sharing the message was not an attempt to associate himself with Asake’s eventual breakthrough or take credit for the singer’s achievements. Instead, he attributed Asake’s success to God, his talent, and the sustained effort he has invested in building his career.
For AY, watching Asake perform before a packed audience in Houston offered a striking reminder of how quickly circumstances can change.
AY used the experience to encourage people in influential positions to treat those seeking opportunities with respect. He argued that an individual struggling to gain recognition today could eventually become someone celebrated by audiences around the world, making it important not to dismiss people simply because they are yet to achieve success.
He also urged people to respect the ambitions of others and avoid looking down on those who are still trying to establish themselves.
AY praised Asake for remaining humble despite the scale of his success and described his performance at the concert as impressive. He also congratulated the singer on his expanding influence, noting the recognition he has received from audiences in Nigeria, across Africa and internationally.
