Atiku officially joins ADC, declares “real opposition has begun”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), formally ending months of speculation about his political future ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The 78-year-old politician confirmed his membership on Monday after receiving his ADC membership card at his Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State.

“Now I have picked up my membership card of the ADC. Now, the real opposition has begun. We will chase the APC out of government,” Atiku said.

Her urged his supporters across the country to register with the party and join the newly formed political front.

Atiku, a former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), resigned from the opposition party on July 16, 2025, citing irreconcilable internal differences and the party’s deviation from its foundational principles.

His departure followed months of deliberation and alignment with other prominent opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal, to adopt the ADC as the coalition platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

Adamawa ADC Chairman, Shehu Yohanna, who co-conducted Atiku’s registration, confirmed that the former vice president’s entry marks the start of statewide registration across all local governments and wards.

He encouraged citizens, particularly youths and women, to join the party.

The ADC’s National Secretary of Registration and Mobilisation, Senator Sadiq Yar’Adua, echoed Atiku’s call, urging Nigerians to register to vote and actively participate in shaping the nation’s political future.

Several prominent political figures from Adamawa State attended the registration ceremony, including former Governor Bindow Jibrilla, Senators Aishatu Binani, Ahmed Barata, Aziz Nyako, and Ishaku Abbo, signalling a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.

Earlier this year, the opposition coalition officially adopted the ADC as its political platform on July 2, 2025, emphasising the mission to “rescue Nigeria, rebuild Nigeria, and return power to the people,” according to ADC Chairman and former Senate President David Mark.

Mark accused the APC-led Federal Government of undermining democratic institutions and focusing on politicking over governance.

Atiku’s official registration with the ADC marks a key milestone in Nigeria’s opposition politics and sets the stage for intensified political mobilisation in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.
