Veteran Nollywood actor Vitalis Ndubuisi has cautioned individuals against the habit of openly sharing their personal struggles, stressing that excessive disclosure does not necessarily lead to comfort or meaningful support.
According to him, many people wrongly believe that talking openly and extensively about their difficulties or problems will bring relief, only to realise later that it often has little impact.
Speaking in a video message, the actor explained that one of the most important lessons he has learned over time is the need for discretion when dealing with personal issues.
He noted that while it may seem natural to open up in search of understanding, such expectations are frequently unmet because others cannot fully grasp the depth of challenges they have not personally experienced.
Ndubuisi further pointed out that people tend to assume that explaining their problems will attract empathy or solutions, but this is rarely the case. Instead, he said, such openness can sometimes produce the opposite effect, creating emotional distance rather than strengthening relationships.
The actor emphasised that no one can truly comprehend the full weight of another person’s burden unless they are directly going through the same situation. As a result, he advised individuals to manage their expectations when it comes to seeking emotional support from others.
He warned that repeatedly sharing personal hardships could lead to unintended consequences, including alienation. According to him, some listeners may become overwhelmed or uncomfortable, gradually withdrawing from the relationship rather than offering the anticipated support.
“One of the biggest lessons I have learned in life is to stop telling people everything that is wrong with you. It is a big mistake to think that after explaining what you are going through, people will offer relief,” he said.
Ndubuisi added that many people only come to this realisation after repeated disappointments.
“Later, you may discover that such outpouring achieves little because nobody truly understands the full weight of your problem since they are not there with you,” he said.
“Sometimes, after explaining everything to them, they even start distancing themselves from you,” he added.
He concluded by advising people to adopt a more reserved approach when dealing with personal matters. Rather than relying heavily on others for solutions, he encouraged individuals to develop inner resilience and handle their challenges with greater privacy.
While some agree with his perspective on limiting disclosure, others argue that sharing struggles can still be beneficial when done with trusted individuals or professionals.
