Pastor Adeboye denies protesting against former President Jonathan

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has dismissed claims that he protested against former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Pastor Adeboye insisted that a viral photograph showing him carrying a placard was taken in 2020, five years after Jonathan left office.

Adeboye explained that the photograph was captured during a prayer walk organised to express concern over killings and insecurity in Nigeria under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He accused a journalist of misrepresenting the date of the event and presenting the exercise as a protest against Jonathan.

The cleric made the clarification while speaking at the RCCG November Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, November 1, 2026, where he addressed reports suggesting that he had carried a placard against the former president during his administration.

According to Adeboye, although he indeed carried a placard during the exercise, the activity was a religious prayer walk rather than a political protest. He said the initiative was organised following a directive from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which had called for a three-day fasting and prayer programme across churches.

Adeboye explained that CAN instructed churches to organise prayer walks around their premises as part of the exercise, adding that he complied with the directive by leading members of his congregation on the walk.

He said, “Recently, just one mischievous somebody wrote in the papers, or said somehow, ‘Pastor Adeboye is a very wicked man. After all, we know that not too long ago, he carried a placard against President Goodluck Jonathan.”

“True. I carried a placard. I can’t deny that. It was important. It was a prayer walk. We wanted to pray,” he said.

He further faulted the journalist for allegedly changing the timeline of the event, arguing that the dates alone should have exposed the inaccurate report.

Adeboye stressed that the prayer walk took place in 2020, whereas Jonathan’s tenure as president ended in May 2015, following the victory of Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 presidential election.
