Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has promised to reduce the cost of living and improve security across Nigeria if elected president in 2027.
The former vice president blamed President Bola Tinubu’s administration for the economic hardship facing households and urged eligible voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the next general election.
Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, made the pledge in a post on his official X account on Wednesday.
He said Nigerians across different generations were struggling with rising expenses and growing insecurity, adding that his administration would work towards making necessities more affordable and ensuring that citizens could live without constant fear.
The former vice president painted a picture of households under pressure, with parents struggling to provide food for their children and pensioners having to choose between buying medicines and meeting their food needs.
He also raised concerns about workers whose earnings were increasingly stretched by the cost of transport, rent and other essential expenses.
“My fellow Nigerians, young and old, I know the pain you are carrying,” Atiku wrote, acknowledging the difficulties confronting people across the country.
He also expressed concern over persistent kidnappings and attacks, saying the threat to personal safety had left many families worried about the fate of their relatives.
According to him, economic hardship and insecurity should not become the conditions that younger Nigerians are forced to inherit.
“No family should have to face hunger and insecurity at the same time. We cannot allow this hardship and fear to become the future our children inherit,” he said.
Atiku linked his proposed changes to the need for political participation, calling on registered voters to collect and keep their PVCs in preparation for the 2027 elections.
He described the voter card as a means through which Nigerians could express their choices and seek change through the democratic process.
“If you are a registered voter, please go and collect your PVC. Hold on to it. It is your voice, your choice and your peaceful power to demand change,” he said.
The ADC presidential candidate also directly criticised Tinubu’s handling of the economy, arguing that the current administration had made life more expensive for Nigerians. He pledged to pursue policies aimed at easing the financial pressure on households while restoring the level of security he said citizens deserved.
“Bola made life expensive. I will work to make life affordable again and restore the security every Nigerian deserves,” Atiku stated.
