Nigerian-American singer Ojay Wright has described the frequency of financial requests he encountered while dating women after relocating to Nigeria as one of his biggest culture shocks.
Wright said he was surprised by how often money became part of his interactions with the women he was dating, particularly during his first few months in the country.
Speaking during an interview, the singer said he had not expected financial expectations to arise so frequently in dating interactions. He contrasted his experience in Nigeria with what he was accustomed to abroad, where he said people could interact without money becoming an immediate subject of discussion.
According to Wright, the issue became apparent repeatedly during his early months in Nigeria, with financial requests occurring even in the initial stages of getting to know someone.
Wright explained that his concern was not about paying for dates or supporting someone he was seeing, but about the regularity with which requests for money were made.
Wright said his expectations had been shaped by his experiences abroad, where, in his account, casual interactions and dating did not necessarily come with immediate financial expectations. The contrast, he explained, made his experience in Nigeria particularly striking.
Wright, the son of veteran Nigerian actress Bukky Wright, has been building his career as a Nigerian-American singer.
