Sarah Martins recounts flood rescue encounter, warns against marrying violent partners

Nollywood actress Sarah Martins has recounted an encounter she witnessed during a flood, where a man allegedly verbally attacked both his wife and the actress after the woman accepted a ride from her.

Sharing the experience in a video posted on her Instagram page on July 14, 2026, the actress used the incident to encourage women to prioritise good character when choosing a life partner rather than marrying out of pity or pressure.

According to Martins, she noticed a woman struggling through floodwater near her estate and decided to offer her a lift. The woman accepted the offer and entered the actress’s vehicle, but moments later, an unexpected confrontation unfolded when a man, whom Sarah later discovered was the woman’s husband, approached and reacted angrily to the situation.

The actress said the husband, who had been walking some distance behind his wife, immediately began shouting insults after seeing her inside the vehicle. Sarah recalled that the visibly angry man questioned why his wife had left him behind in the flood before directing harsh words at both women.

She explained that after realising the couple were together, she stopped the car and invited the man to join them, hoping to ease the tension.

Rather than accepting the offer, Sarah said the man rejected the invitation, looked at her before uttering a curse against both of them and continued walking away.

The actress admitted that she was left confused by the intensity of his reaction, questioning whether he was upset because his wife accepted help, because she had experienced an act of kindness without him, or because the person offering assistance was another woman.

Using the incident as a lesson for her followers, Sarah Martins urged women to pay closer attention to a person’s character before committing to marriage. She stressed that wealth or financial status should never be the deciding factor in choosing a spouse, arguing that abusive behaviour can be found in both wealthy and struggling individuals.

She maintained that marrying out of sympathy or pity could have serious consequences, advising women to avoid relationships with people who display violent tendencies.

According to the actress, friendship and mutual respect should form the foundation of every successful marriage, concluding her message with the advice that people should “marry your friend.”

Martins further revealed in the caption accompanying her video that she eventually asked the woman to leave her vehicle and return to her husband. She explained that she became concerned the woman could face physical abuse after returning home if she remained in the car without him.
