Popular Nigerian content creator and actress Taaooma has revealed that African parents, particularly her mother, remain the biggest source of inspiration behind many of her comedy skits.
Speaking in an interview with TheCable, which was shared on X on Monday, the entertainer said she often turns to everyday experiences in African homes whenever she needs fresh creative ideas, describing family interactions as an endless source of relatable content.
The comedian explained that although she occasionally experiences creative blocks, as many content creators do, she has developed a reliable way of regaining inspiration.
According to her, observing the habits, reactions, and unique mannerisms of African parents provides her with authentic material that resonates with audiences across Nigeria and beyond.
She said she simply adds her own creative touch to these familiar experiences before bringing them to life on screen.
Taaooma noted that the behaviours commonly displayed by parents in African households are both humorous and relatable, making them ideal for storytelling through comedy.
She said many people can identify with the experiences she recreates in her videos because they reflect situations that occur naturally in everyday family life.
“It’s not like I don’t run out of ideas, but I obviously recoup and rejuvenate. One of the major sources of my ideas is my mum and other African parents — what they do and how they do it. I just take the ideas and put my own spice on them,” she said.
She added that simply reflecting on the actions and habits of parents can generate countless ideas for comedy content, describing many of those everyday moments as surprisingly amusing when viewed from a different perspective.
“If you sit down and think about what your mum does and everything, there are so many crazy things they do,” she said.
Beyond discussing her creative process, Taaooma also shared how she protects her creativity by being selective about the kind of content she consumes.
According to her, she intentionally consumes material discriminately, preferring content that contributes positively to her thinking and inspires new ideas for her work.
“I don’t just consume content anyhow. I consume things that I know would inspire me and things that are good for my brain,” she explained.
The actress also spoke about her reading habits, admitting that reading books has not always been part of her routine. However, she disclosed that she recently began reading ‘Atomic Habits’ and hopes to complete the book before the end of the year.
Reflecting on one of her most recognisable comedy characters, Quadri, Taaooma revealed that the role was never intended to become a permanent feature of her content. She explained that the character was originally created as a brief appearance for an advertisement, but audience reactions convinced her to keep developing the role.
“Quadri was actually a walk-past role. He was never meant to stay. When I did Quadri, I realised people liked the character,” she said.
She described Quadri as representing the bold and rebellious personality often associated with young men from Ilorin in Kwara State, adding that nearly everyone knows someone with similar traits.
Taaooma also said that although she enjoys showcasing elements of Nigerian culture in her work, she rarely plans her characters in advance, explaining that most of her creative decisions happen naturally as ideas come to her.
