Veteran Nollywood actor Kola Oyewo dies at 80

Veteran Nollywood actor and theatre scholar, Kola Oyewo, has died at the age of 80.

News of his passing was confirmed by fellow actor Kunle Afod, who announced the development on Instagram.

Oyewo was widely regarded as one of the country’s most accomplished actors, earning recognition for his memorable performances on stage and screen, as well as his dedication to academic scholarship.

Afod, while confirming the actor’s death, described him as a legend whose influence would continue to resonate long after his passing.

In his tribute, he praised Oyewo’s remarkable talent, timeless performances and enduring legacy within the Nigerian theatre and film landscape, noting that generations of actors and creatives would continue to draw inspiration from his body of work.

“Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” Afod wrote.

Oyewo’s death comes only months after he celebrated his 80th birthday in March 2026.

He had reportedly battled ill health for some months before his death.

Throughout his career, Oyewo established himself as a prominent figure in Nigerian theatre and film. His work helped shape the evolution of the country’s performing arts sector and contributed to the development of younger generations of actors.
