Nollywood actor Daniel Etim Effiong has said that partners who cheat in relationships should be approached with empathy and support rather than immediate condemnation, arguing that infidelity is a problem that requires healing and intervention.
The actor made the remarks during a recent appearance on the ‘Diary of a Naija Girl’ podcast, where he spoke extensively about marriage, accountability and the way society reacts to mistakes within relationships. According to him, many people are quick to judge individuals involved in infidelity without first trying to understand the deeper issues that may have contributed to their actions.
Etim Effiong explained that when a person makes a mistake in marriage, the first response should not always be anger or rejection, but a willingness to help the person confront and overcome the issue. He noted that support and honest conversations could play a major role in resolving marital problems before relationships completely break down.
“I think the approach should be, if someone messes up in a marriage, it should first come from a place of, ‘How can I help you?’” he said during the podcast discussion.
The actor further stated that infidelity should be treated as a behavioural problem that requires serious attention rather than being viewed solely as an unforgivable act. According to him, couples need to focus on identifying the root causes of such actions before they can begin the process of healing and reconciliation.
“No, this is a problem, how can I help you out of this problem? To deal with it, you have to come out of this problem. It’s a problem before we can start talking about healing,” he added.
Etim Effiong also compared cheating to other forms of misconduct, including lying and stealing, stressing that society already recognises many harmful behaviours as problems that need correction and accountability.
His comments have since sparked conversations on social media, with many Nigerians sharing divided opinions about his perspective on relationships and accountability. While some users agreed with his view that counselling and emotional support are necessary in troubled marriages, others argued that infidelity is a conscious choice that should not be excused.
The discussion adds to the growing public conversations around modern relationships, marriage expectations and mental health in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. In recent years, several celebrities and public figures have openly spoken about challenges in their marriages, including trust issues, emotional trauma and the pressure of maintaining relationships under public scrutiny.
Relationship experts have also repeatedly emphasised the importance of communication, therapy and professional counselling in resolving conflicts between couples. Some counsellors believe that understanding the emotional or psychological triggers behind repeated behaviour can help couples rebuild trust, while others maintain that accountability must remain central to any reconciliation process.
Etim Effiong, who is known for his roles in several Nollywood productions and public conversations around family life, has often shared opinions on marriage and parenting during interviews and podcast appearances. His latest comments have once again placed him at the centre of online debates about love, commitment and forgiveness in relationships.
