Tinubu appoints Professor Segun Aina as new JAMB registrar

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Segun Aina as the new registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), replacing Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose tenure is scheduled to end on July 31, 2026.

The appointment, announced on Thursday, marks a significant transition in the leadership of the country’s admissions agency.

The announcement was contained in a statement released by the president’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Aina is expected to continue the reforms and technological advancements introduced during Oloyede’s administration while introducing new innovations aimed at strengthening the operations of the examination body.

At 39 years old, Aina is set to become the youngest registrar in the history of JAMB. The incoming registrar, who turns 40 in July, is widely recognised for his expertise in computer engineering, digital systems, and institutional reforms, with years of experience in educational technology and public-sector transformation.

President Tinubu expressed confidence in Aina’s ability to sustain and improve on the achievements recorded by the outgoing registrar. The President noted that the professor’s experience in technology and systems management would play a key role in advancing the examination body’s operations and maintaining its integrity.

“President Tinubu expects Professor Aina to bring to bear his vast experience, knowledge and practical insight into the operations of the board, to take the critical educational organisation beyond the laudable heights achieved by his predecessor,” the statement read.

Aina currently serves as a professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University and is regarded as a specialist in systems engineering, digital infrastructure and examination technologies.

His appointment comes at a time when the country continues to push for more technology-driven reforms in public institutions and educational administration.

The new registrar obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent. He also earned a master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security as well as a doctorate in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University.

In addition, he attended the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.

According to the statement, Aina’s connection with JAMB dates back to his National Youth Service period when he worked with the board and gained experience in admissions administration and data-driven systems.

The statement further revealed that Aina has spent more than 15 years providing advisory services to both federal and state governments on digital transition, system reforms and institutional efficiency. His experience also extends to examination bodies such as the National Examinations Council (NECO) and National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), where he served as a consultant on ICT systems, examination integrity, and digital process optimisation.
