Actress Shine Rosman has dismissed the widespread belief that most Nollywood stars are financially comfortable, revealing that many actors in the Nigerian film industry are battling serious financial challenges despite their public fame and glamorous lifestyles.
Speaking during a podcast interview hosted by fellow actor Baaj Adebule, Rosman explained that the perception of wealth surrounding movie stars is often exaggerated.
According to her, only a small number of actors enjoy financial stability, and many of those individuals make their money from businesses and investments outside acting.
The actress stated that fame in Nollywood does not automatically translate to financial success, noting that numerous actors struggle to survive between movie roles due to inconsistent job opportunities and unstable earnings within the industry.
“The most overrated misconception about Nollywood stars is that we have money. I don’t know why people assume we have money. Some of us do have money, but from other ventures. But many of us are struggling financially,” she said during the discussion.
Her comments have sparked conversations online about the economic realities of the Nigerian entertainment industry, particularly for mid-level and upcoming actors who depend heavily on acting jobs as their primary source of income.
Industry observers have noted that while a few top Nollywood figures earn millions through endorsements, film production deals, ambassadorial contracts, and personal businesses, the majority of actors face uncertainty due to irregular acting opportunities and fluctuating production schedules.
It is also common for actors to experience lengthy periods without movie roles, leaving many unable to maintain a stable income throughout the year. This situation has reportedly pushed several entertainers into entrepreneurship, content creation, real estate, fashion, and other side businesses to support themselves financially.
Rosman’s remarks also highlighted the growing pressure many entertainers face on social media, where celebrities are often expected to maintain appearances of wealth and success regardless of their actual financial situation.
Over the years, several Nollywood veterans have similarly spoken about the challenges facing actors behind the scenes, including poor remuneration, lack of royalties, inconsistent payment structures, and limited financial protection within the industry.
Rosman’s statements have continued to resonate with many Nigerians online, with some social media users expressing surprise at the realities she described, while others argued that celebrity status should not automatically be equated with wealth.
