“Time waits for no one,” Chiwetalu Agu urges youths to plan for old age

Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has advised young Nigerians to enjoy their youthful years responsibly while deliberately preparing for the realities of old age, warning that ageing often comes with serious health, financial, and emotional challenges.

Agu gave the advice in a video message that has since gone viral across social media platforms, where he spoke about the pressures many elderly people face due to declining health and limited resources.

In the video, the veteran actor urged young people not to take time for granted, stressing that youth offers opportunities that may not be available later in life.

He encouraged them to live fully but with foresight, noting that old age is rarely easy for those who fail to plan ahead.

Addressing the physical realities of ageing, Agu said old age often comes with one health challenge after another, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney problems, stroke and other neurological conditions.

According to him, these issues can make later life extremely difficult, especially for individuals who did not prepare adequately during their productive years.

He warned that time waits for no one, adding that while young people have the strength and freedom to enjoy life, they must also be mindful that ageing is inevitable.

He described old age as “not child’s play”, urging youths to maximise their present opportunities while thinking ahead.

Drawing from the Bible, Agu referenced Ecclesiastes chapter three, noting that life is governed by seasons and timing. He emphasised that enjoyment and responsibility are not mutually exclusive, advising young people to balance pleasure with preparation.

He cautioned that those who fail to plan for old age often face regret when the time to reap arrives.

The actor further warned against living recklessly without considering the future, saying people cannot expect to enjoy the rewards of labour they never invested in.

According to him, the quality of one’s old age is largely determined by the choices made earlier in life, especially regarding discipline, hard work, and long-term planning.

Agu also highlighted the importance of financial stability and strong family relationships, stressing that money plays a critical role in easing the burdens of old age.

He urged young people to work hard, invest wisely and build savings, noting that medical and living expenses in old age are far more expensive than youthful leisure spending.

He explained that while younger people often spend money with optimism, believing more income will come, spending in old age is usually accompanied by anxiety, especially when income streams have dried up.

As a result, he advised youths to invest early and secure their future while they still have the capacity to do so.

Beyond finances, Agu encouraged young Nigerians to maintain close family ties and live responsibly, adding that spiritual grounding also plays a role in navigating life’s seasons. He stressed that he was not trying to frighten anyone but simply speaking from experience and observation.

Concluding his message, the veteran actor described old age as a journey that only those who prepare adequately can complete peacefully.

He urged listeners to “make hay while the sun shines” and prayed that everyone would reach old age in good health and comfort.
