Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, has declared his intention to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in securing a second term in the 2027 presidential election, stating that his position is firm and without apology.
The governor made this known shortly after commencing his second term in office, emphasising that his decision is rooted in conviction and strategic alignment rather than political compromise.
He spoke during a television interview in Awka, where he addressed his relationship with the president and his party’s stance ahead of the next general election.
Soludo further revealed that his party, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), would not present a presidential candidate in 2027, maintaining a position similar to that adopted during the 2023 elections when it backed Tinubu’s candidacy.
“Tinubu is my friend and I want him to win his second term. I’m unapologetic about that,” he said.
The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) described the president as a trusted ally and urged other aspirants considering a run for the presidency to reconsider their ambitions in light of what he sees as the need for continuity in governance.
While acknowledging that it would be a significant milestone for the South-East to produce a Nigerian president, Soludo maintained that Tinubu should be allowed to complete a second term in office.
According to him, such continuity would serve the broader interest of national stability and development.
He also clarified that his endorsement of Tinubu should not be misconstrued as anti-party activity, stressing that it reflects a deliberate and strategic collaboration aimed at fostering governance and development across party lines.
Soludo highlighted the working relationship between his administration and the Federal Government, describing it as productive and beneficial to Anambra State. He noted that such cooperation has yielded tangible results and reinforced his belief in supporting the current administration.
He said, “APGA’s main focus remains strengthening its influence at the state and regional levels while backing a presidential candidate it believes can deliver at the national level.”
The governor’s comments come amid early political alignments and consultations ahead of the 2027 elections, as stakeholders across party lines begin to position themselves for the next electoral cycle.
His open endorsement of Tinubu is expected to generate reactions within both regional and national political circles, particularly within the South-East, where calls for a president of Igbo extraction have remained strong.
