Davido condemns Edo school bullying as police launch investigation

Afrobeats star Davido has denounced a violent bullying episode at Igbinedion Secondary School, describing the students involved as “Animals” and branding the act “disgusting.”

The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, showed two male students assaulting a fellow pupil while a third recorded the attack, sparking widespread outrage and calls for urgent intervention.

The video depicted one of the aggressors dragging the victim by his suit and stomping on his chest as the boy screamed in pain, with the student filming begging them to stop.

The footage prompted swift reactions online, with Davido publicly condemning the behaviour and highlighting the serious nature of such violence in Nigerian schools.

His comments reinforced public concern and intensified demands for accountability from both school officials and law enforcement.

Following the viral spread of the clip, the Edo State Police Command announced that it had launched a full investigation, and the school authorities confirmed that the students directly involved in the assault had already been expelled.

The police assured the public that legal measures would be taken in line with the ages of the perpetrators and Nigerian law, stating that acts of bullying and intimidation among students would not be tolerated and that offenders would face appropriate sanctions.

The divisional officer overseeing the area has been directed to conduct a detailed inquiry, while the school reiterated that the student who recorded the incident has been suspended.

Authorities also called on members of the public to provide credible information that could assist the ongoing investigation, ensuring that justice is served.

The case has drawn attention to the rising concerns over bullying and violence within schools, highlighting the psychological and social risks these behaviours pose to victims.

Advocacy groups and child welfare experts have stressed the importance of prompt intervention and robust disciplinary measures to prevent long-term harm and to foster safer learning environments.

Davido’s condemnation has further highlighted the role of public figures in shaping social awareness and driving accountability. By speaking out, the singer has helped to amplify the issue, pressuring both law enforcement and educational institutions to act decisively.

Social media discussions have also emphasised the need for stricter anti-bullying policies and consistent enforcement to protect students nationwide.

The Edo State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice and that the community is kept informed on the progress of the investigation.

The incident has sparked a broader conversation on school safety and student welfare, underscoring the necessity for preventive measures, awareness campaigns, and a proactive approach to bullying in Nigerian schools.

This episode serves as a reminder of the critical need to prioritise student protection and uphold a culture of accountability within educational institutions, ensuring that incidents of violence are addressed swiftly and effectively to safeguard children across the country.
