Afrobeats singer Omah Lay has spoken about an emotional breakup that unfolded while he was attending the Grammy Awards, admitting that the personal turmoil left him mentally absent at one of the most prestigious events in global music.
The singer revealed that the relationship, which lasted barely two months, ended during the awards period, at a time he believed it was developing into something far more serious, a situation that deeply affected his state of mind.
The disclosure was made during a listening party for his forthcoming album, ‘Clarity of Mind’, where the singer explained that the emotional breakdown occurred while he was physically present at the ceremony but internally distracted.
According to him, the weight of the breakup overwhelmed him, even as international pop star Justin Bieber was performing on stage, an experience he said should have been memorable but instead became emotionally draining.
Reflecting on the moment, Omah Lay said the issues in the relationship had started even before the Grammys, making it difficult for him to enjoy the event. He noted that despite the short duration of the romance, he had been emotionally invested and genuinely believed it could lead to starting a family.
The singer described the experience as embarrassing and painful, stressing that the emotional weight consumed him throughout the event.
Omah Lay further admitted that his inability to balance emotional commitments and professional responsibilities contributed to how deeply the breakup affected him.
He explained that he tends to immerse himself fully in whatever he is involved in at any given time, making it difficult to divide attention between music and personal relationships. As a result, the heartbreak overshadowed what should have been a career highlight, leaving him disconnected from the atmosphere and significance of the awards ceremony.
“I don’t know how to do two things at the same time,” the singer said, noting that when he commits to something, he does so completely.
According to him, this personality trait meant that while he was present at the Grammys physically, he was emotionally consumed by the relationship issues, preventing him from enjoying the performances, interactions, and overall experience of the event.
The emotional episode, he said, later became a source of creative inspiration. Omah Lay explained that the experience influenced his song ‘Don’t Love Me’, which explores his complicated relationship with love, attachment, and emotional vulnerability.
The track, he noted, reflects his internal struggle with maintaining emotional balance and the fear of losing focus when deeply involved in romantic relationships.
“So my song ‘Don’t Love Me’ is me saying, Let’s enjoy the moment, but once I find another thing that gives me pleasure, I’m going to leave,” he explained, adding that the song mirrors his honest feelings about love and self-preservation.
The revelation has since generated widespread reactions on social media, with fans expressing sympathy while others questioned whether the timing of the disclosure was connected to promoting his upcoming album.
Despite the mixed reactions, Omah Lay’s openness has reinforced his reputation for emotional transparency and deeply personal storytelling. As anticipation grows for ‘Clarity of Mind’, many listeners expect the project to reflect the emotional depth and vulnerability the singer has become known for, drawing from real-life experiences that continue to shape both his music and public persona.
