Ghana has officially granted citizenship to American YouTuber Darren Jason Watkins Jr., better known online as IShowSpeed, following the completion of his month-long tour of Africa, the nation’s Foreign Minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced on Monday.
The 21-year-old content creator, who recently reached 50 million subscribers on YouTube, received the Ghanaian passport after the government confirmed his “irrefutable ties” to the country.
Ablakwa praised him for his efforts in showcasing Ghana and the wider African continent on a global stage.
“Keep making our great nation Ghana, and our beloved African continent proud. Ghana celebrates you,” he said.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, IShowSpeed has become one of the most-followed digital creators worldwide. He was recognised as the Most Influential Creator of 2025 by Rolling Stone magazine, and Forbes estimates his net worth at $20 million.
The YouTube and Twitch star began his Africa tour on December 29, visiting 20 countries over the course of a month. His itinerary included a visit to a diamond mine in Botswana, an exploration of Ethiopia’s culinary offerings, and attendance at the Africa Cup of Nations football final in Morocco.
Through his videos, IShowSpeed offered millions of followers a fresh perspective of Africa, highlighting its culture, tourism, and innovation instead of the typical media narratives of poverty and conflict.
IShowSpeed’s engagement with the continent has resonated strongly with his audience, particularly Black Americans, some of whom shared emotional responses, crediting him with presenting a different and positive vision of Africa.
The citizenship grant is part of Ghana’s ‘Beyond the Return’ initiative, which encourages members of the African diaspora to formalise ties with the country.
The move is also seen as a diplomatic gesture, reinforcing Ghana’s strategy to strengthen cultural influence and foster connections with international figures who highlight Africa positively.
While many Ghanaians welcomed the decision as enhancing the country’s global profile, some questioned the value of granting nationality to a foreign celebrity, sparking discussions on citizenship criteria and the balance between symbolic gestures and tangible benefits for Ghanaian citizens.
The influencer’s milestone comes amid other notable achievements, including reaching 50 million YouTube subscribers this month. His tour and digital presence have attracted international attention, positioning him as a key figure in reshaping global perceptions of Africa.
Foreign Minister Ablakwa, who confirmed the passport approval, noted that IShowSpeed had previously received a diplomatic passport last year. This latest move formalises his connection with Ghana, strengthening his role as a cultural ambassador for the continent.
