Portable released on bail after week in prison

Nigerian singer Portable has regained his freedom after spending a week in detention, following his arrest over alleged assault and theft.

He was released on Monday after fulfilling all bail conditions set by the Federal High Court in Ota, Ogun State.

The singer, known for his hit song “Zazu,” faced accusations of assaulting his baby mama, Ashabi Simple, and her siblings, in addition to allegedly stealing their car.

In a video circulating widely on social media, Portable denied the allegations, saying, “They lied against me. I’m innocent.”

The incident that led to his arrest occurred on New Year’s Eve, when a heated confrontation between Portable and Ashabi went viral online.

In the video, Ashabi is seen holding Portable’s clothes and exclaiming, “Pami baby” (Baby, you have to kill me), which prompted widespread public attention and police intervention.

Following the altercation, Ashabi and her siblings filed formal complaints against Portable, accusing him of assault and theft. Portable was subsequently arrested and arraigned before the Federal High Court in Ota on a nine-count criminal charge, including theft, causing harm, assault, and resisting arrest.

At his initial court appearance, the presiding judge remanded Portable in prison and adjourned a fresh bail hearing to Monday, January 19, 2026. During his week-long detention, the court reviewed his application for bail.

Upon meeting the bail conditions, Portable was released, allowing him to remain free while awaiting trial. The specific bail amount was not disclosed.

Further court proceedings have been scheduled to examine the nine-count charges against Portable.

Fans celebrated Portable’s release on social media, while critics continue to question his conduct and the impact of his celebrity status on the legal process.
