Court dismisses FG’s criminal charges against Senator Natasha

An Abuja High Court on Thursday dismissed the criminal charges brought by the Federal Government against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the representative of Kogi Central, ending a legal battle that had attracted nationwide attention.

The case was discontinued after the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation filed a Notice of Discontinuance, prompting the court to terminate proceedings in the defamation and related criminal charges.

The charges were connected to comments the senator allegedly made during a televised interview, which the prosecution claimed were defamatory. The matter had sparked widespread debate about freedom of speech, political accountability, and the limits of prosecutorial authority within Nigeria’s democratic system.

Justice C. N. Oji, presiding over the case, acknowledged the Notice of Discontinuance dated December 12, 2025, and struck out the case. In his ruling, the judge emphasised that the outcome highlights the importance of exercising prosecutorial powers with restraint and protecting democratic principles.

The case, registered as FHC/ABJ/CR/195/2025, had drawn significant public scrutiny, with civil society groups and rights organisations condemning the prosecution as an attempt to suppress political expression.

After the ruling, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan described the outcome as a vindication of her stance, stating, “Today’s outcome affirms my belief in the rule of law. I remain committed to serving my constituents and defending the democratic rights of all Nigerians.”

She also thanked her legal team and supporters for their unwavering backing throughout the proceedings.

Representing the Federal Government, the counsel confirmed the withdrawal of the charges in court, explaining that the discontinuation was in line with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and aimed at preserving public confidence in the justice system.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who has been outspoken on governance and accountability issues in Kogi Central, is expected to resume her legislative duties with renewed public support.
