Gospel music fans were left in shock as popular singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, famously known as Omije Ojumi, passed away on January 12, 2026, at a Lagos hospital.
The announcement was made on Instagram by her colleague, Ayo Melody, on behalf of the family.
The post, signed by Olawale Akinnaanu, described her passing and paid tribute to her life, stating: “With great sadness, we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnaanu Adeoye, Omije Ojumi, on 12th January 2026 at Lagos hospital, Nigeria. May God grant her eternal rest.”
The announcement included a photograph of the singer and a short video clip commemorating her career.
Although the statement did not reveal the cause of death, a video that resurfaced earlier this week showed Akinnaanu seeking prayers for a leg ailment.
In October 2025, during a service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan, she was seen seated with her leg elevated while a cleric prayed over her condition, which he described as a spiritual affliction. It remains unclear whether this issue contributed to her death.
Akinnaanu began singing at a young age and later left a career in banking to fully dedicate herself to gospel music. She gained national recognition with her hit song ‘Omije Ojumi’, which became a favourite in churches and Christian homes across Nigeria, followed by tracks such as ‘O Ti Sure’.
Colleagues, fans, and fellow gospel artistes have taken to social media to express shock and grief over her death. Many praised her musical talent, her dedication to gospel music, and the inspirational impact of her ministry.
Her passing is a significant loss to the Nigerian gospel music community, where she was celebrated not only for her voice but also for her commitment to evangelism, often performing at churches, conferences, and gospel events nationwide.
The family has not yet disclosed funeral arrangements. Friends and well-wishers continue to call for prayers and support for the bereaved family.
