Nyesom Wike

Abuse won’t deter my support for Tinubu —Wike

Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has said he remains one of the most criticised political figures in Nigeria, ranking second only to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but insists the attacks will not weaken his political convictions or alliances.

Wike made the remarks on Saturday in Ochigba, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, while addressing party leaders and supporters during a thanksgiving service held in honour of Chibudom Nwuche, a former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives.

According to the former Rivers State governor, the intense criticism he faces is largely driven by his insistence on loyalty, consistency, and strict adherence to political agreements.

He said his refusal to abandon those who stood with him over the years has made him a target for political opponents.

Wike recalled the period leading up to the 2023 presidential election, describing it as a time of uncertainty when many politicians were unwilling to publicly declare their support for Tinubu. He said that while others hesitated, he and his allies took a firm stand in backing the president.

He noted that supporting Tinubu at the time was not an easy decision, as the outcome of the election was far from certain. Nevertheless, he said he believed politics required courage and commitment, even when the consequences were unclear.

According to Wike, those who openly supported Tinubu during the campaign in Rivers State played a significant role in strengthening the president’s position in the state. He argued that their contributions should not be forgotten, particularly now that the president is in office.

The FCT minister criticised individuals who now publicly proclaim loyalty to Tinubu but were absent when support was most needed. He said that true commitment was demonstrated during difficult moments, not after victory had been secured.

Wike reassured his supporters that their sacrifices would not go unrewarded, stating that those who stood firmly by their decisions would ultimately benefit. He emphasised that his political approach is rooted in conviction rather than convenience.

He also made it clear that his support for Tinubu remains unchanged, stressing that it was a collective decision taken after careful consideration and one that would be upheld. According to him, loyalty to agreements is a core principle he refuses to compromise.

Wike said the criticism he receives stems from this principle, noting that many of his detractors are uncomfortable with his belief that agreements must be honoured once they are made. He added that political credibility is built on keeping one’s word, not shifting positions to suit public opinion.

Addressing party stakeholders, Wike urged unity and focus, stressing that internal cohesion was essential for sustaining political relevance and influence, particularly in Rivers State. He encouraged leaders and supporters to remain steadfast and not be distracted by external pressure.

The minister also hinted at renewed political activity in the coming year, saying that discussions and strategic engagements would intensify from January. He reiterated that consistency and trust would remain the foundation of any future political engagement.

Wike concluded by reaffirming his position, stating that he has never hidden his political stance and would continue to stand by decisions taken in good faith.

He assured supporters that despite ongoing criticism, he remains resolute in his commitment to President Tinubu and those who stood with him during challenging times.
