Leaders of the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja, weeks after the group announced him in absentia as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The meeting comes amid growing political interest in Jonathan’s possible return to the presidential race, although the former Nigerian leader has yet to publicly declare whether he will contest the 2027 election.
As of the time of the meeting, details of the discussions between Jonathan and the PDP faction had not been made public.
The visit further fuels speculation over the former president’s political future, especially after the faction formally ratified his nomination despite his absence at the event where he was presented as its preferred presidential candidate.
Despite the endorsement, Jonathan has consistently refrained from making a definitive statement on his political ambition.
The latest meeting follows remarks made by Jonathan on May 7 after a group of protesters stormed his Abuja office and urged him to declare his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Responding to the calls at the time, the former president said he would consult widely before taking a decision on whether to join the race.
Since making that pledge, Jonathan has not publicly addressed the media on the issue or provided an update regarding his consultations. His position has remained unchanged, leaving political observers and supporters speculating about his next move.
